The Rotary theme for September Is Basic Education and Literacy. “The more you read, the more you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go.” Dr Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut”. What can Rotarians do to jump start children into reading? River Falls Rotarian Tony Pedriana will share a program focused on getting books into the hands of preschool and young children.
Tony Pedriana spent thirty-five years as a teacher and administrator in Milwaukee's central city. He has spent his years in retirement meticulously researching the discrepancies between reading science and reading ideology and chronicled his findings in the book, Leaving Johnny Behind: Overcoming Barriers to Literacy and Reclaiming At-Risk Readers. He currently resides with his wife Mary Jo in River Falls, Wisconsin where he manages an organization called Jump Start to Literacy, whose goal is to get books into the hands of low-income families.
