Spotlight on Literacy Projects Around the District
May 2022
The Rotary Clubs of Roseville MN and Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka developed REEP, Rotary Educator Exchange Program in 2016. The goal was to improve skills and empathy for teaching growing numbers of English Language Learners (ELL) in both countries. The exchange was for teams of three educators led by a Rotarian to spend two weeks abroad observing teaching methods living with families and experiencing different cultures.
Minnesota educators learned what it’s like to be a minority and how those impacts learning by experiencing new languages, values, religions, foods, and climate. Sri Lankan teachers experienced the same and learned American methods of teaching English to their students, to improve their ability to function in a global, English-dominated world.
Two exchanges were completed, one by elementary teachers and the second by high school educators before Covid, which prevented more. The educators’ reflections and evaluations were highly positive.
Once Covid becomes more controlled and a “normal” part of life everywhere, this type of exchange between non-English speaking developing countries and the US can be expanded. Such a program can have an important impact on literacy around the world.
For more information contact Roseville Rotarian Ted Johnson, District Literacy Team, at or 770-552-1458.

We concluded February and March giving by D5960 Rotarians contributing nearly $85,000 to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to the more than 450 Rotarians who made one or more gifts.
Having spent some time on the West Coast, I know that the Rotarians there feel like they are the leaders in support of Our Rotary Foundation.  I can tell you that we are on a par as our Annual Fund giving is up nearly 2% from a year ago (a record year for us).
In our SHARE THE LOVE campaign we had 345 Rotarians who made gifts up to $364, 81 who made gifts of $365 to $999 and 16 who made gifts of $1,000+.
The exciting news is that we are within reach of a District 5960 goal of reaching $500,000 to the Annual Fund.  And that means that in three years there will be $250,000 in DDF coming back to the district for District Grants, Global Grants and more.  You are showing how we can make a difference in the lives of others!
How will reach and surpass that $500,000?  Make the gifts you normally do in these final two months of the Rotary year and be sure they are made in a timely manner and processed by TRF by the end of June.  Our per capita average for gifts to the Annual Fund is $170.91 and fewer than half of district Rotarians have made a gift to the Annual Fund.  If those who have not yet made their gift would each contribute $25 (Every Rotarian Every Year) it would be a truly remarkable year.
